COORANBONG sailor Theo Kuiters is about to turn his 40ft luxury yacht into a medical supply ship and needs help to stock it.
He is calling for unwanted spectacles and donated Bandaids, bandages, dressings, anti fungals and antibiotic creams and ointments, tea tree oil, tea tree soap, elastoplast, bandages, antiseptic creams, and pain killers.
The destination is the island of Aore in the north Pacific island chain of Vanuatu where a Queensland doctor, Dr Alan Profke and his wife Debra, run a volunteer clinic and dispensary for the impoverished natives.
"The native people there are just so poor that anything we can give them is welcomed with open arms. They can't afford prescription glasses and any and all unwanted spectacles we can take to them makes a huge difference, especially for the older island residents," Mr Kuiters said.
Once a year Dr Profke organises a maritime rally with a small flotilla of yachts leaving Brisbane in May carrying volunteers and donated supplies. Full story |
